Freelancing: Six months on

It’s now been sixth months since I left my previous role at Engine Creative to start up on my own as a freelance web developer and I felt now was as good a time as any for an update of what I’ve been working on.

The early days leading up until Christmas was a steady flow of work for existing clients. I’ve been doing freelance design work in my spare time since 2008, so I’d been fortunate enough to build up a base of valuable clients. These were mostly website designs for companies in and around Northampton, but also included some “Photoshop to WordPress” builds for local design agencies.

Buckingham Design Associates (BDA)

In the new year, I spent several weeks working for BDA in Buckingham assisting with several WordPress projects and putting together a number of HTML email templates for their clients. Projects I was part of whilst working with BDA include:

Callum Smart

Following my work with BDA, I designed and developed a responsive WordPress site for Callum Smart – a talented violinist and rising star in the classical music world. Callum’s site features a fully mobile-optimised responsive design and serves as a platform for promoting his debut recital album, as well as providing his followers with biographical information, album reviews and details of his concerts.

Nene Valley Paving

Another website I designed and built early in 2014 was for Nene Valley Paving – a family run business in Northampton that supplies paving, aggregates and timber products, as well as providing a professional landscaping service for their customers. Their site is also built upon the WordPress framework but additionally features an e-commerce online shop, powered by Jigoshop.

Medico Legal Physio

Several of my clients work within the private healthcare sector, so I was pleased to continue this with an opportunity to design a new website for Mark Buckingham – owner of Witty Pask and Buckingham physiotherapists in Northampton. Mark needed a website to promote the work his does writing medicolegal reports: www.medicolegalphysio.co.uk

Wetdog Creative

Another design agency with whom I enjoy an ongoing working relationship is Wetdog Creative. I have been working with Jan and Caroline at Wetdog for over a year now, helping out with their WordPress builds for their clients as well as their own website. Continuing my PSD-to-WordPress service, I have built several sites for them over the last year or so – most of which are fully responsive to browser size and some include Jigoshop-powered online shops. Here are a few examples:

What’s next?

Freelancing is about finding a balance between actively working on client projects, finding new opportunities and networking with other designers and agencies to get your name out there. The whole “peaks and troughs” thing is certainly a reality too. I love keeping busy but I also enjoy the quieter times, as it gives me an opportunity to keep up with the ever-evolving world of web design and to learn new skills.

Over the coming months, I have several other client websites to work on as well as a few interesting and exciting personal projects. I’m also intending to build upon my own website, although client work will always come first.
